There is something quite romantic to walk along the Yarra River on a crisp winter day.
This day just came alive when we saw part of the river bank transform into an ice skating rink. On the right of the footpath were small food outlets. The River was still and there was a haze in the air.
In the distance we saw a circus tent. This was our destination.
We swiftly walked by all the activities to the right and to the left of us and finally found ourselves in one of those fairy tale places � a warm, intimate circus tent with clowns and people in brightly coloured outfits, smiling, welcoming us inside. There was so much to do inside, even before we made our way to the seats.
So, we bought ourselves some steaming Russian potato and slow cooked beef piroshki, and, with our mouths full, we watched as the people flock through the entrance.
Soon, we were ushered in, the show was about to begin.
The start of the circus is always exciting. The music started and Circus Oz Twenty Sixteen began!
What made this circus most unusual was the participation of a live band. These days, it is quite unusual to have a live band perform at a circus. Moreover, this band wasn't hidden, somewhere in the background. No! In fact, they were integrated right throughout the show. Right from the first act, the grand piano was was featured not only as an instrument but also as a prop for the circus performers.
One musician managed to climb on top of a trapeze, hang upside down and play his saxophone. The music was up beat; crisp and energising - in line with the daring acts we were witnessing.
There were many original acts. My favourite number was of a girl who stood, barefoot on a man's head. He was wearing a suit and she, a pink dress. I watched as they managed to flip their clothes and by the end of this stunt, he was wearing her red dress and she was in his suit - all the while she was standing, barefoot oh his head. Now this , folks, you have to go and see! Go get your tickets.
