Summer 1993 is a deeply moving film. It is about a 6 year old girl, Frida (Laia Artigas), who loses her parents to AIDS.
Frida is adopted by her mother's brother, Esteve (David Verdaguer), his wife, Marga (Bruna Cusi) and daughter, Anna (Paula Robles).
We watch this film through Frida's world. Right throughout the film, there is no distraction from the deep, intense, underlying pain of this six year old girl. Even though she is being cared for by a loving family, Frida grieves the loss of her mum every day and there is an underlying sadness in every aspect of her existence. It is surprising how such a young actor, Laia Artigas, is able to feel Frida's pain which penetrates through the screen to the audience. Anna, who accepts Frida as her older sister, is playful, loving and trusting. The interaction between the two girls, Frida and Anna is real. It is easy to forget that you are watching a movie. Frida both loves Anna and is consumed by jealousy that she has a real family and real love.
It is impossible to detach from this little girl, this little Frida.
This outstanding film should be seen. You Can see it at this year's Spanish Film Festival.
