Amity Dry must be my age. I was watching her for 60 minutes as she sang and told stories of herself growing up. Well, those were my stories, I thought.
I remember myself at all those ages - wanting to grow up as fast as possible. Amity got a perm trying to look cool and instead I cut my fringe and chopped off my hair. Then later, Amity would wear those unbearably high heels and barely any clothes to get into nightclubs with a fake ID. I did the same. I would 'borrow' mum's beautiful silk dresses and Italian high heels and tell my parents I am sleeping over at a friend's place. Amity longed to grow up, have a family and children. So did I. So did most of the women in the audience. I watched them as they watched Amity. They were nodding and smiling, some laughing.
Amity Dry delivers a clever and funny story about the transformation that happens when a girl becomes a teenager and then an adult, all in a blink of an eye.
She does this through song and witty banter. It is easy to relate to Amity. In a very clever way, she changes the lyrics to some well-known songs and makes the songs relevant to what she is trying to say. She also sings some of her original tunes with beautiful and touching lyrics.
In the end, Amity admits to being happy with who she is. She is happy that she no longer needs to be accepted by everyone around her. She can be herself. She now looks at those young girls queuing up at nightclubs, with those uncomfortable high heels and she has no desire to do that. She wants to be herself and she wants to be comfortable. I really think we are so similar!
