I generally get a 'feeling' about a show even before it starts. The feeling this time was that of excitement. I felt just as excited as my six year old daughter, who was sitting beside me in her tinker bell outfit.
We all felt welcomed and homey when Bonnie Lythgoe came on stage and so humbly told us about this show and how excited the whole team was to perform in Melbourne. She encouraged us to participate and told us that booing the villains and cheering the heroes was an important part of this show's success. Well, we all wanted this show to succeed and we generously belted out our feelings.
The glue of the show was the charming Mr SMEE, Kev Orkian. He was the one who connected with us the most. He was also the only 'kind' pirate. Unanimously, the audience liked this guy. The troupe of pirates were highly entertaining, vibrant bunch with great vocals and acrobatics.
Captain Hook, Todd McKenney, probably has really thick skin. Each time he came on stage there was almost a hissing boo that came along with him. Todd morphs into Captain Hook so perfectly. He has a powerful stage presence. It was a delight to watch him sing and perform.
The show was like a multi layered cake - suitable for the very young children - just because it is the story of Peter Pan and Tinker Bell. It also was suitable for older children and teens because of some of the superb dance routines, songs and jokes. In fact, some jokes that would have been missed by the teens would certainly be captured and appreciated by the adults. I was admiring the kaleidoscope of views that were made available to the audience so that we all would find this show accessible and highly entertaining.
The timing, the comedy, the improvisation that came along with the whole crew is faultless.
The story of Peter Pan is so kind. It teaches us all, young and old, about the importance of dreams, of staying young at heart, of having fun. It teaches us to appreciate our families.
The night was pure delight and left me feeling uplifted.
