The Summer We Found Our Superpowers is a 2020 Norwegian live action children’s film adventure with a lot of heart.
Directed by Silje Salomonsen and Arild Østin Ommundsen, who are a married couple, and starring their daughters, Vega and Billie Østin this is an uplifting and empowering story about sisterhood.
Vega (9) and her wild sister Billie (5) are going on an overnight hike with their dad in the Norwegian woods. The eagerly awaited trip is everything they had hoped for until Dad falls into a mountain crack and twists his ankle.
Unable to move he asks his girls to get help. Initially they feel lost, but instead of giving in to panic or despair, Vega and Billie begin to picture themselves as heroes in the middle of a fairy-tale and chose to accept the mission! Drawing courage from each other They bravely face their fears, discover their superpowers and find strength in sisterhood!
With an emotive score by Thomas Dybdahl, recorded by the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra, The Summer We Found Our Superpowers is not only beautifully photographed it contains a powerful message that is not forced, rather evolves gently and sympathetically.
The performances by the two girls are outstanding, possibly due to having their parents work so closely with them, plus a script that is achievable for their age group given the age of the younger sister.
With a backdrop of the mountains of Norway, The Summer We Found Our Superpowers is a winner and great viewing for parents to sit and watch with their children (6 upwards).
