Bach Up Close | Intimate, Playful, Alive

Bach Akademie Australia’s Weddings and Parties Over Coffee brought together the music, humour and theatricality of Johann Sebastian Bach in the beautiful surrounds of St James’ Church, Sydney. Led by Artistic Director Madeleine Easton, the performance featured soprano Miriam Allan, tenor Dan Walker and baritone Christopher Allan alongside the musicians of Bach Akademie Australia.

St James’ Church provided a wonderful backdrop for the performance. The architecture and intimacy of the church complemented Bach’s music, while its acoustics carried the vocals and instruments beautifully through the space, giving the performance a natural resonance. Despite the accomplished calibre of the performers, there was an intimacy to the concert that made the experience feel remarkably personal. With the musicians and vocalists performing in such close proximity to the audience, there were moments where the combination of setting, sound and performance was genuinely captivating.

The scent of church incense, blended with the aroma of freshly brewed coffee, added another sensory layer to the experience and cleverly connected the setting with the theme of the performance. The audience remained visibly engaged throughout, following their program guides, swaying along to the music and seemingly fixated on the performances unfolding before them.

The musicians were equally engaging to watch. Each performer played their individual part with precision, but there was also a visible enjoyment of the music across the ensemble. Musicians moved, swayed and at times almost danced along with their own and each other’s performances. Rather than distracting from the music, this gave the concert an unexpected theatrical quality and created a strong sense of connection between the performers and the audience.

Subtle costume changes also helped distinguish the different sections of the program. These were simple rather than dramatic, but provided a refreshing change in tone and added personality and a sense of humility to the presentation. It was these smaller details, combined with the natural movement of the performers, that prevented the concert from ever feeling static or overly formal.

The Coffee Cantata was a highlight, unfolding almost as a miniature comic opera. Its humorous story of a father attempting to curb his daughter’s enthusiasm for coffee allowed the vocalists to move beyond simply performing the music and into character and storytelling. Miriam Allan, Christopher Allan and Dan Walker brought expression and humour to their roles, supported by an ensemble that remained very much part of the theatrical experience.

For an English-speaking audience, the German lyrics inevitably created some distance from the narrative. The program guide became important in understanding the story and context behind the music. However, the expressive vocals, physicality and interaction between the performers meant that much of the character and humour could still be appreciated without understanding every word.

Weddings and Parties Over Coffee demonstrated that Bach need not feel distant, solemn or inaccessible. Bach Akademie Australia delivered a polished performance while retaining warmth, humour and a genuine sense of enjoyment. Against the beautiful backdrop of St James’ Church, with its resonant acoustics and the subtle sensory combination of incense and coffee, the accomplished musicianship, expressive vocals and understated theatricality came together to create a highly engaging and memorable performance.
