I admit to being fussy when deciding which shows to review; however, when I saw it was The Hunchback of Notre Dame, there was no hesitation. This latest CLOC Musical Theatre production is another success.
I have a penchant for musical theatre and was excited to experience this stage adaptation of the 1996 Disney film and Victor Hugo’s 1831 novel.
The original production, Der Glöckner von Notre Dame, was the first Disney musical to premiere outside the US. It ran for three years in Berlin, making it one of the city’s longest-running musicals.
The show features music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz. The tone is more gothic and darker than the animated film, especially with director Shaun Kingsma at the helm. Shaun has been part of the Melbourne music scene for more than thirty years. The production is edgy and exciting, and he brings a wealth of experience and originality to the stage, having received eight Victorian Musical Theatre Guild Awards.
The team behind this production is exceptionally talented. Musical director David Clausen-Wisken, choreographer Melanie Ott, assistant director Amy Bryans, and assistant musical director Jessica Sun should all feel proud. The set design is magnificent.
When the show begins, you will notice the choir at the back of the stage. They are an integral part of the production, and I want to congratulate each and every one of them.
Teresca Giasiracusa returns to the National Theatre in the role of Esmeralda. Teresca received rave reviews for her role as Diana Morales in A Chorus Line, and she does not disappoint here, delivering a dynamic stage presence. A graduate of JMC Academy, with credits ranging from Juliet in Romeo and Juliet to Quincy/Marge in Mr Burns, she has also worked as a director and choreographer. This is the first time I have watched her perform, but it certainly won’t be the last. Her talent is unquestionable.
Jackson Howe plays the tormented Quasimodo. Even beneath the make-up designed to transform his appearance, you can still see he is a handsome man, but he fully commits to Quasimodo’s painful journey. Kudos to him for his impressive acting ability. His vocal range blew me away, and some of the notes he held were extraordinary.
In the role of the unlovable Claude Frollo, Mike Gardiner was commanding from the moment he stepped on stage. The role seemed custom-made for him. He was that powerful.
Thomas Bowman, as Captain Phoebus DeMartin, played the role with heart and captivating energy.
Rising star Evan Evans landed the principal role of Clopin Trouillefou, a major milestone in his career. He performs with tremendous energy as both narrator and leader of the gypsies. His commanding stage presence and powerful vocals make it clear his star will continue to shine brightly.
I cannot write a review without mentioning the supporting cast. They were energetic, talented, and all deserving of acknowledgement. Great productions are built on the contributions of everyone involved, with each performer bringing something unique to the stage.
This is a glowing review because it deserves to be.
The production takes place at the iconic National Theatre Melbourne, located five kilometres from the Melbourne CBD at 20 Carlisle Street, St Kilda. The season began on May 15 and runs through to May 30. I suggest you do not hesitate to buy tickets to avoid missing out.
Please note that the show contains strobe lighting, haze, and fog effects for atmosphere. There are also loud sound effects and sudden surprises — which I loved — but it is always good to know in advance.
