THE DEB is a lively Australian musical about two wildly different teenage cousins from opposite worlds.
Directed by Rebel Wilson and based on the stage musical by Hannah Reilly and Meg Washington, the film features Charlotte MacInnes as Maeve and Natalie Abbott as Taylah, alongside Shane Jacobson, Stevie Jean, Tara Morice, and Rebel Wilson herself.
At its core is Taylah Simpkins — a shy farm girl and high-school outsider — who sees the Debutante Ball (‘the Deb’) as her chance to reinvent herself and finally be seen. All she needs is a date.
That plan unravels when her city cousin Maeve is sent to Taylah’s drought-stricken hometown of Dunburn. Dismissing the Deb as a “heteronormative shit-show,” Maeve disrupts tradition and stirs up the town.
As tensions rise and incidents unfold, the cousins begin to understand each other, united by a deeper need for recognition and acceptance. What starts as a simple quest for a Deb date evolves into something far more meaningful. Both are pushed to confront insecurities, challenge expectations, and ultimately embrace who they are.
The film delivers strong musical moments, with several standout tracks, and a vibrant visual style that keeps the energy high — even when the storyline leans into familiar territory.
Though it opens in Sydney, the film is firmly grounded in regional New South Wales. Its setting adds texture and authenticity, proudly embracing its Australian identity. While distinctly local, its themes are widely relatable.
The humour — often dry — lands well and helps tie the film’s tone and message together.
This is an entertaining watch with a soundtrack that lingers. Strap in and enjoy the ride.
THE DEB opens in Australian cinemas from April 9, released by Rialto Distribution.
