The Good Food and Wine Show at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre is big.

If that seems overly reductive, let me elaborate.

The hall is big. A lofty concrete and steel edifice resembling a zeppelin hangar - one you could actually fly the zeppelin around in. So, while the crowds are also big, everyone is having a rollicking good time in a place easily spacious enough to stave off claustrophobia.

The number of stalls is big. Which means there aren’t huge lines to buy or test the goods. There are over 300 exhibitors, representing wineries, distilleries, artisan producers, family businesses and kitchen-gadget brands. I visited operators selling everything from double air fryers to chocolate-flavoured champagne, which I had to be physically prised away from. I was astonished at the sheer number of small Australian distilleries and wineries on display. The stallholders are chatty and friendly and at no point did I get the impression of a hard sell. In fact, they seem to be having as good a time as their potential customers. I particularly appreciated the girls from Woombye Cheese Company, who were wearing what appeared to be blocks of Leerdammer on their heads. And they were still smiling.

The perks are big. Every operator seems to have unlimited free samples of food or drink. Even those of you with experienced palates will find strange taste sensations you’ve never encountered before or discover a new favourite tipple. If not, you can scoff enough freebies that you don’t need lunch. As for drink samples? I would recommend leaving your car at home. Be warned. If you do like a taster, I recommend you make a purchase there and then. I went back near the end for an awesome duck-and-fig pâté, only to discover it was completely sold out.

The atmosphere is big. There’s a sociable, festive air. Music drifts from all sides, excited chatter fills the auditorium and a million wonderful smells assault the senses.

The range of shows is big. The free stage draws excited throngs to watch celebrity chefs and food personalities perform; their antics projected live onto a huge screen. In smaller alcoves, ticketed masterclasses offer a deeper dive into the culinary world. The first I attended was an Italian wine tasting, paired with some truly delicious food. Intimate and relaxed, we were asked to guess four types of wine from a blind test. I didn’t get a single one right but nobody cared and I came away feeling a bit more sophisticated.

The second was a larger, cocktail-making class at the Sonos Sound Bar. As well as getting a potted history of Cointreau, I discovered my partner could quite easily become addicted to pepper margaritas. So could the old lady next to me, who quickly polished off four, then promptly left.

From the VIP ticket holders' lounge provided by Singapore Airlines to the peanut butter whisky van disguised as a dog, there is something for everyone. If you like to eat and drink, it’s truly worth visiting. If you are a foodie or a wine connoisseur, you are going to be in absolute heaven.

In either case, it’s a very big day out.

Verdict. The perfect place to eat, drink and be merry
