Sharp by name. Sharp by nature.
Guneet Kaur doesn’t tiptoe around a joke. In Sharper, she goes straight for it, pushes a few boundaries and brings the audience along for the ride.
Kaur’s hour of comedy moves quickly, takes a few risks and, most importantly, keeps the audience laughing. The humour feels natural and conversational, and there’s an ease to her delivery that makes the show easy to settle into.
Sharper may not rely on huge punchlines or over-the-top moments, but it doesn’t need to. Kaur keeps the laughs coming consistently, with an audience clearly enjoying themselves throughout. The steady pace also means the hour passes surprisingly quickly.
Kaur isn’t afraid to touch on subjects like sexuality, cultural stereotypes and even terrorism. It could be risky territory, but she finds the funny side and the audience is right there with her.
That willingness to go into subjects people can sometimes be hesitant to joke about gives the show some edge. Kaur manages to approach the material without making it feel forced or like she’s simply trying to shock the room.
What works particularly well is Kaur herself. She’s comfortable on stage and able to take the audience with her even when the material moves into more provocative areas. Judging by the reaction in the room, her humour connects.
Sharper is funny, fast-paced and refreshingly willing to play with subjects that could very easily go wrong in less capable hands. Judging by the laughs around the venue, I wasn’t the only one who walked out entertained, and the hour felt much shorter than it actually was.
