Romeo and Juliet presented by Come you Spirits, is the ever famous story written by William Shakespeare of love, warring families, fate and emotions.
A powerful and tragic theatrical masterpiece that is still loved 400 years later.
The play adapted for modern Australian audiences follows two young lovers from rival families, their love for each other leads to heartbreak and tragedy.
The feud between the Montagues and Capulets shows how bitterness and pride can destroy lives, while Romeo and Juliet's rushed decisions highlight the dangers of acting purely on emotion.
The beautiful dialogue from the Come You Spirits performing troupe is performed with passion for dramatic effect making this one of the most memorable plays ever written.
Whilst some younger members of the audience may struggle with the language, the overall story is still very much relevant in this day and age, leaving a lasting impression on the audience.
Charlotte Edwards plays Juliet, and is definitely someone to watch, her portrayal of Juliet is angelic, warm and endearing. Her luminous performance balances the traits of both rebel and dreamer.
Ciaran O' Riordan adaptation of Romeo is believable but humorous. His vulnerability and youthful energy has a sincerity that resonates with the audience.
Lord Capulet and the Friar, are played effortlessly by Charles Mayer, a multi award winning actor and performer. He has trained at the London Guildhall school of Music and Drama, He has performed in the West End of London, Pop up Globe and The Seymour Centre.
Jo Mayer plays Tybalt and The nurse, her interpretation not only adds personality to the play but also provides the vicarious energy to the role in a dazzling emotive performance. Jo also has a magnificent repertoire behind her, having performed Shakespeare across the UK and worked alongside the British Shakespeare and Australian Shakespeare Company.
Mercutio, played by David Halgren, a graduate of Actors Centre Australia has a commanding voice and presents on stage that are mesmerizing to watch.
Along with Adam Applebaum the lighting designer who helps shape the overall mood of each performance and Letitia Hodgkinson the art director, creator of staging, costumes, and aesthetic vision.
Overall, Romeo and Juliet is a moving, dramatic play that will always capture audiences however the play is portrayed. The cast were all delightfully warm, entertaining and gave it their all. Its combination of romance, tragedy and powerful themes made it a classic that remains relevant today.
