There’s something wonderfully anticipatory about arriving at Cirque du Soleil’s Big Top - that quiet certainty you are about to witness something extraordinary. On the Melbourne premiere night of KOOZA, champagne flowed, bursts of flames erupted behind the tent, and roving spotlights carved patterns through the night sky. A live band wove through the crowd with infectious energy, singing, leaping between guests, and joyfully playing their instruments as they immersed audiences in the carnival-like atmosphere.

Before a single performer stepped on stage, the world of KOOZA had already blurred the line between reality and spectacle. The pre-show experience perfectly sets the tone for what follows.

KOOZA feels more like the traditional circus people grew up with - more direct, lively, and emotionally immediate than some of Cirque du Soleil’s more conceptual productions. It is visually rich, mischievous, full of humour.

KOOZA moves like a collective human inhale and exhale, drawing the entire tent into moments of suspense before releasing it in waves of laughter. One moment, the audience erupts at the antics of the clowns and the comic self-importance of “The King”; the next, stunned silence falls as performers hurl themselves through the air, momentarily suspending the audience in disbelief. This interplay between danger and delight gives KOOZA its electrifying sense of life. That energy is mirrored in acts of astonishing physical mastery.

This tension between danger and delight gives KOOZA its unforgettable sense of life. Across the evening, performers constantly push the limits of balance, timing, strength, and fearlessness, with each act escalating the sense of awe inside the Big Top. The Teeterboard sequence launches performers impossibly high into the air with explosive energy and split-second precision. The Balancing on Chairs act is hypnotic in its simplicity and control, while the Double High Wire performance pushes nerves to breaking point as artists skip, cycle, and balance across elevated wires with perfect composure.

Then comes the Wheel of Death - perhaps the show’s most heart-stopping showmanship. Giant rotating wheels spin at terrifying speed while performers leap, run, and somersault across them without harnesses, sending waves of audible gasps through the tent.

Yet amid all the technical brilliance, KOOZA never loses its humanity. David Shiner’s vision centres not simply on circus tricks, but on the inner world of the clown - innocence, vulnerability, loneliness, love, and laughter - giving the production warmth beneath all its theatricality.

Visually, the production is breathtaking. Vibrant reds, golds and striped costumes evoke vintage circus traditions, while skeletal dance sequences, elaborate masks and an eccentric royal court create a dreamlike world suspended somewhere between the gothic and the whimsical.

The live musicians deserve enormous praise. Rather than simply accompanying the acts, they become part of the storytelling, driving the rhythm of the show with music that shifts from haunting and atmospheric to high-energy and celebratory.

What KOOZA does so brilliantly is remind audiences why live performance matters. In an age dominated by screens and digital reality, Cirque du Soleil creates genuine awe through human skill, trust, timing, and imagination. Every leap, balance, and near-impossible feat happens in real time, only metres from the audience.

By the finale, the crowd inside the Big Top is on its feet, exhilarated and completely enchanted. KOOZA is Cirque du Soleil’s thrilling return to the company’s circus roots, filled with danger, beauty, and comedy. It is spectacular family entertainment!

Who’s It For?

KOOZA appeals to audiences of all ages — from families and first-time theatre-goers to longtime Cirque du Soleil devotees. Children will be swept away by the colour, comedy, and visual magic, while adults appreciate the physical artistry and heartfelt depth woven throughout the production. For longtime fans, KOOZA feels like a thrilling return to Cirque du Soleil’s classic circus roots.
