The Sydney production of Hair is a vibrant, energetic, and surprisingly relevant revival of the groundbreaking rock musical that first challenged audiences in the late 1960s. While firmly rooted in the counterculture movement of its era, this production demonstrates that its themes of freedom, identity, love, and resistance remain powerful and meaningful today.

From the moment the cast bursts onto the stage, the audience is immersed in a world of youthful rebellion and iconoclastic views. 

Leading the tribe is the highly talented Maxwell Simon as Berger, Alex Cooper as Claude and Elizabeth Brennan as Sheila. A stella cast from the other tribe member's brings the whole show together, but especially outstanding is Linden Trescott, definitely someone to keep an eye on.

The creative team behind this amazing production are Director Glenn Elsten, OAM, having well over 250 productions behind him and working alongside is choreographer Sue- Ellen Shook who's  been working in the industry for over 4 decades as well as Paul Norton the musical director. Elston OA

The ensemble brings an infectious energy to every scene, creating a strong sense of community that lies at the heart of the show. Their performances feel authentic and spontaneous, making it easy to become invested in the lives and struggles of the tribe as they navigate friendship, politics, and the looming threat of the Vietnam War.

Musically, Hair is a triumph. The iconic score, featuring songs such as “Aquarius,” “Good Morning Starshine,” and “Let the Sunshine In,” is delivered with enthusiasm and vocal strength. The live band enhances the production with a rich rock sound that captures the spirit of the era while still feeling fresh for modern audiences. The musical numbers are not merely entertaining; they also drive the narrative and reinforce the show’s central messages.

The staging is imaginative and dynamic, making excellent use of the performance space. Colourful costumes, bold lighting, and fluid choreography combine to create a visually engaging experience. The production successfully balances moments of exuberant celebration with quieter, more reflective scenes, allowing the emotional weight of the story to resonate.

One of the show's greatest strengths is its ability to connect historical events with contemporary concerns. Issues surrounding war, social justice, personal freedom, and generational conflict continue to spark discussion today, giving the musical a relevance that extends beyond nostalgia. The production encourages audiences to reflect on how much society has changed—and how much remains the same.

If there is a weakness, it is that the narrative can occasionally feel fragmented. Unlike more conventional musicals, Hair prioritises themes and atmosphere over a tightly structured plot. However, the charisma of the cast and the emotional sincerity of the performances ensure that the audience remains engaged throughout.

Overall, Sydney’s Hair is an exhilarating and thought-provoking theatrical experience. Combining unforgettable music, passionate performances, and enduring social commentary, it captures the spirit of a generation while speaking directly to contemporary audiences. It is a production that entertains, inspires, and leaves a lasting impression long after the final curtain call.
