There are comedy shows and then there are comedy shows that feel like catching up with your funniest mate over a beer. Dane Simpson's 100% Hits is firmly and joyfully in the second category.

Wagga Wagga's favourite son arrives at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival with his best foot forward, taking the audience on a whirlwind tour of the last decade of his life in comedy. It's a journey that begins in the humblest of places, running the tech desk for comedy shows and trivia nights back home, then through to newcomer comedian competitions, and fast track a few years later, to being triumphant at the Edinburgh Fringe before landing a gig at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival Gala. And don’t forget the television guest features. It is the storytelling between the milestones that make this show packed with laughs.

None of it, Dane is quick to point out, would have been possible without the accidental comedic contributions of his family. His father, brother and mother have spent years roasting him without mercy, and in doing so handed him an inexhaustible supply of material. Now a dad himself, a whole new chapter of unbelievable-but-true stories have opened. The man is not going to run out of punchlines anytime soon, not with that family.

What sets 100% Hits apart is its warmth. Dane doesn't just tell stories; he invites you into them. Painting the scene, complete with a slideshow and the occasional video clip, the evidence lest anyone doubt him, is proof he did not make any of this up. The show has the easy, unforced intimacy of a front-seat car ride home with someone you've known for years. The laughs come thick and fast, but they land because they're rooted in something genuine, a love for people, connection and the country.

As seen on Have You Been Paying Attention?, Just For Laughs and Amazing Race Celebrity Edition, Dane Simpson is no longer the new kid on the block. But here's what fame hasn't done: it hasn't made him slick, it hasn't made him distant and it hasn't made him forget where he came from. His feel-good energy and infectious charm remain completely and wonderfully intact.

100% Hits is a show that earns its title. Wholesome, hilarious and full of heart. It's the perfect way to round out an evening at the festival with family and friends. Wagga Wagga represent!
