I think it’s fair to say we are all a work in progress.
Very few of us, however, announce it from a curbside bench at 8:00 p.m. on a Friday night. With anxiety in his eyes, Dahn Rozario did exactly that. Somewhere between accepting his flyer, sharing a two-minute conversation, and being lightly spat on by intermittent Melbourne rain, I found myself strangely intrigued by what he seemed to be selling well below value.
Inside the lush, speakeasy-style 1806, Rozario delivers a sharply observed and delightfully chaotic hour in Dahnward Spiral—a show that leans into the unpredictability of travel, friendship, and survival abroad with both wit and warmth.
Drawing heavily from misadventures, Rozario paints a vivid picture of life on the 3 a.m. East London edge: dodgy accommodation, ever-present bed bugs, and the emotional roulette of dating in foreign cities. There’s a rawness here that feels earned rather than exaggerated—particularly when he unpacks the all-too-relatable frustration of being “stitched up” by “friends” on holiday who enthusiastically suggested the trip in the first place.
What elevates Dahnward Spiral beyond a string of travel anecdotes is Rozario’s performance craft. His impersonations are a standout—fluid, sharply defined, and deployed with a confidence that keeps the narrative moving effortlessly. Each character adds volume and texture rather than distraction. The result is a show that is both tightly constructed and joyfully unhinged, flowing perfectly no matter which direction it takes.
There’s an ease to his engagement—playful without being overbearing—that makes the room feel part of the journey. That is the beauty of Rozario’s connection with the audience: he has the ability to adapt his entire show should it head in another direction; that alone is a talent. The tone oscillates between silly, animated bursts and grounded, reflective beats, creating a dynamic rhythm that keeps the audience consistently invested.
Beneath the humour lies something more substantial: a story of persistence—of doing it tough to get to where he is now; of navigating unfamiliar places, unreliable people, and the small indignities that come with both. It’s this balance of absurdity and honesty that makes the show resonate.
Dahnward Spiral is ultimately raw, realistic, and deeply relatable—especially for anyone who has ever roughed it far from home. For anyone considering buying, he is currently well below CV. Get in now while you can still afford him.
