I attended Christina Ibrahim’s Opera to Originals on a Friday evening after a long week at work, and it was exactly what I needed. What was meant to be a date night became a girls’ night, but the show would suit either occasion equally well. It is the kind of evening you can dress up for or enjoy more casually—whatever mood you bring, it meets you there.

I arrived expecting some opera, but not quite knowing what else the evening would hold. As an opera fan, the Italian in me will always connect with the drama, but hearing live operatic singing from only centimetres away was something truly special. Christina has an exceptional voice: powerful, controlled and richly expressive. Even the small technical details stood out, such as the way she adjusted the microphone’s distance to manage the changing dynamics of her voice. The singing was unquestionably the star of the evening.

And do not let the word “opera” in the title deter you. The opera selections are impressive without being intimidating, complemented by accessible piano-bar-style music, warm hosting and familiar songs. Even those who do not usually enjoy opera are likely to find plenty to enjoy.

The storytelling was another highlight. Christina’s narrative flowed naturally throughout the evening, creating a heartfelt and well-connected experience. Her rapport with the audience was immediately clear, particularly with familiar supporters in the room, and this only added to the intimacy of the performance. She spoke directly to the audience, engaged with them, looked at them and, most importantly, sang to them. It was easy to feel included in the experience.

There were a few small imperfections and moments of nerves, but these made the show feel human rather than detracting from it. While Christina’s voice is clearly her primary instrument, her musicality at the piano was still evident. When a backing track failed to cooperate, her ability to improvise her own accompaniment was especially impressive.

In short, Opera to Originals is a talented, polished and warmly entertaining adult night out—something like a classy Fringe show with more comfortable chairs. I would recommend it, particularly as a Friday-night treat.
