CHAPTER TWO is a semi-autobiographical romantic comedy written by Neil Simon. Its premise centres on giving love a second chance when one’s first experience of it has come to an end.

Neil Simon was one of America’s most successful playwrights and screenwriters, and the author of such well-known plays and musicals as Barefoot in the Park, The Odd Couple, Sweet Charity and The Goodbye Girl, to name just a few.

CHAPTER TWO, which premiered on Broadway in 1977, therefore comes with an impressive pedigree. The setting is New York, 1980.

It is the story of George, played by Daniel Ferris, a writer and grieving widower who returns from an overseas trip intended to help him heal after the loss of his wife, Barbara. His brother Leo, played by Simon Pearce, arranges a date for him, which George reluctantly agrees to, with Jennie, an actress and divorcee played by Laura Stead.

The two connect and, in the midst of a whirlwind romance, become engaged.

Without giving away too many spoilers, the play explores their relationship as they navigate doubts, vulnerability and the need for reassurance.

As mentioned, the play is semi-autobiographical, with the events on stage closely mirroring experiences from Simon’s own life. At the same time, it is very much a comedy, filled with his trademark wit and sharp dialogue.

Hunters Hill Theatre, under the excellent direction of Mojo Band, has brought the piece beautifully to life.

The interplay between the characters, including Jennie’s best friend Faye, played by Margareta Moir, is clever and sharp, keeping the story entertaining while moving it steadily forward.

An impressive stage setting establishes the mood, supported by a well-chosen soundtrack. Add four talented actors who fully inhabit their roles, and the play takes off and never really comes down. What unfolds on stage is supported by witty dialogue and first-rate performances.

For me, the measure of a strong performance, whether on film or on stage, is whether it draws you in to the point where you stop thinking about what you are watching and become immersed in what is happening before you. This performance did exactly that.

CHAPTER TWO, presented by Hunters Hill Theatre, is playing at Club Ryde Ex, 728 Victoria Road, Ryde, from 29 May 2026 to 21 June 2026. Running time is approximately two hours, including a 15-minute intermission.
