Alex Ward’s premise for the show is a rehearsed recount of life updates: I'm a lesbian, I'm planning my first child and all whilst navigating thorough the lens of a recent discovery of dyslexia. Literally Anyone is a show that embodies the "you’ll never believe what happened on the weekend" energy as the life unfolds through a series of interconnected misunderstandings. Whether dissecting the logistical absurdities of planned pregnancy, navigating life admin or simply walking through the shops, the strength of the performance lies in its pacing and Ward’s animated re-enactments. Inhabiting the awkwardness of her past self we get a glimpse into what life is like and wonder how will she get out of the sticky situations.
These moments feel lived-in and authentic, showcasing a comedian who is deeply comfortable sharing the messy parts of her identity. If there is a hitch in the momentum, it arrives during the audience interaction. While Ward is a well known and loved on air, the crowd work in this particular hour felt a touch forced, at times appearing more like a structural obligation than a natural extension of the storytelling. There is certainly room for these segments to breathe and feel less scripted, allowing her natural wit and punchy one-liners to shine. However, these are minor in what is otherwise a polished hour of stand-up.
Literally Anyone is exactly what it promises to be: an easy-going, light-hearted run through the trials of modern life. It doesn't aim to reinvent the wheel or leave the audience in a state of existential crisis. Instead, it offers a warm, hilarious and deeply human look at the beautiful social whoopsie moments that make up a life. If you’re looking for a delightful way to cap off your festival evening, Ward is a safe and very funny bet.
