In the current climate—both environmental and social—it’s easy to feel like we live in a world cycling through several seasons at once, uncertain and shifting. The Weathering, at Theatre Works, showing as part of the 2025 Melbourne Fringe, offered a fresh perspective on complex themes.

Fusion Theatre’s latest production takes the climate crisis and transforms it into something deeply personal, thought-provoking, and sincere.

Blending physical theatre, original music, puppetry, and dreamy projections, The Weathering avoids preaching or panic. Instead, it invites audiences in gently, bridging the gap between science and storytelling with artistic flair. At times, viewers are wrapped in quiet emotion; moments later, they are swept up in a genre-defying performance that remains consistently genuine.

At its heart, The Weathering explores themes of humanity: community, care, and creativity amid continual change. Through movement, connection, and moments of surprising joy, the ensemble builds a world teetering on the edge yet full of resilience.

Directed by Darcy McGaw and Jo Raphael, the show is brought to life by a confident ensemble of 24 artists—many of whom are disabled. This inclusive casting reflects Fusion Theatre’s ongoing commitment to providing opportunities for artists often left out of the mainstream. Since 1997, the company has focused on accessibility, inclusivity, and co-creation, demonstrating that art made by everyone, for everyone, resonates more deeply and authentically.

The production’s strength lies not only in its performance but also in its process. It breaks down traditional theatrical boundaries, allowing the performers’ own experiences and voices to shape the narrative. The evocative original music underscores the emotional core of the piece, acting as a beating heart throughout the performance.

The Weathering is a gentle nudge toward a better future. One where we listen harder, care more, and maybe even dance in the rain.
