Eighteen Lives
A beautiful comedy about reincarnation, missed connections and the people we keep finding.
What if the people in your life have always been there?
Eighteen Lives (祖宗十八代) is a funny, strange and unexpectedly moving theatre work about reincarnation, fate and the people we keep finding across lifetimes.
Across six wildly different eras of Chinese history, three performers transform through lovers, enemies, parents, children and strangers, meeting each other again and again in new lives, new bodies and new circumstances. Some connections are instant. Some are unfinished. Some seem impossible to escape.
Performed in Mandarin with English subtitles, Eighteen Lives blends sharp comedy and physical theatre into a fast-moving, visually playful meditation on history, human absurdity and the strange familiarity of love.
This is not a history lesson. It’s a beautiful comedy about timing, memory and the people who return to us, again and again.
Funny, tender and a little uncanny, Eighteen Lives invites audiences to laugh, reflect, and wonder whether the people in our lives are ever really here for the first time.
