THE WHALE

THE WHALE

The Whale tells the story of a morbidly obese English teacher who hides from the world.

Charlie cannot stop eating to the detriment of everyone around him, including his long-estranged daughter.
Desperate to reconnect, Charlie reaches out to her, only to find a viciously sharp-tongued and wildly unhappy teen.

Big-hearted and fiercely funny, The Whale is the story of a man’s last chance at redemption, and of finding beauty in the most unexpected places.

The 2022 Academy Award winning movie (starring Brendan Fraser) was adapted by Samuel D. Hunter from his 2012 play.

Feedback/Comments

Oriana

The Little Theatre was a perfect setting for this thought provoking play that gave an intimate view into Charlie's struggles with his obesity and desire to reconnect and provide for his estranged daughter. I thought the cast members were great in the portrayal of their characters and kept me engaged from beginning to end.

Leize

The set was very well detailed to capture the scene and the cast, especially Charlie, were great. The story deals with many complex issues, including self-worth, body-image prejudices, broken relationships, co-dependency and more, but the beginning is very slow.

Julia

This is an emotionally intense play, not for those looking for light- hearted entertainment despite some welcome humour.
The ensemble cast, delivered authentic performances, and made very effective use of the intimate theatre space. A worthwhile theatre going experience.
