Constellations (On the House Review)

Constellations (On the House Review)

Having received global critical acclaim, Constellations is an experimental production which defies almost every known theatre norm. Written by Nick Payne and produced by Victor Kalka, Constellations offers a theatre experience like no other.

When Bee Keeper Roland (played by Henry Hulme) meets scientist Marianne (Alice Birbara) time fragments into a thousand possibilities. We watch as they fall in love, fall apart, fall back in love, marry and eventually confront death. In amongst this basic plot there was commentary on humanity and our ability to control the present or future. However, at times there was a handful of murmurs of confusion in the audience as some of the intricacies of the story were hard to follow.

Across the whole play, there was really only 10 or so short scenes. At its core, this play considers the idea that there are thousands of scenarios for each life situation, and that each creates a different course of action. In meeting this theme, each scene was repeated a handful of times with the actors changing their attitudes, behaviours etc. Despite the romantic nature of the story the audience is reminded that amongst these infinite possibilities there are some which will remain constant; especially death.

Commendations are given to the actors who achieved the almost impossible in repeating the same scene in many ways with each repeat appearing different from the last.

There are no props and lighting is used minimally, predominantly to surround the actors in their scene. These minimalist decisions are brave and play out well, removing any possible distractions from the dialogue and engagement between the two actors. With no props, beautiful sound elements have been implemented by sound designer Ryan Devlin to easily convey changes in scene or time.

Constellations is an exceptionally unique work and has been produced beautifully by Victor Kalka. It is certainly like nothing you’ve seen before and excellent post-theatre discussion is guaranteed.

Constellations is playing until September 1st at Chippen St Theatre. Tickets can be purchased at https://www.victorkalka.com/constellations-home/
