Gilbert O'Sullivan - The 50th Anniversary World Tour

Gilbert O'Sullivan - The 50th Anniversary World Tour

Gilbert O’Sullivan, one of the biggest Irish songwriters & recording artists to reach international chart success in the 70s and 80s, has announced he will be in Australia in 2018 for a national tour as he celebrates 50 years in music.

‘Nothing Rhymed’, Gilbert’s first single, was released in 1970 and was an instant hit in the UK, reaching the Top 10 on the UK charts. In 1972 Gilbert firmly cemented himself amongst the world’s best with his second album Alone Again (Naturally). This critically acclaimed album topped both the UK & US charts for an astonishing 6-weeks, earning him 3 Grammy nominations.

British recognition soon followed with ‘Clair’ & ‘Get Down’ reaching the summit of the UK singles charts and his LP Back To Front topping the album charts. In the same year at the 18th Ivor Novello Awards (UK awards for songwriting and composing) Gilbert was named ‘Song Writer of the Year’. ‘Why Oh Why Oh Why’ became another Top-Ten chart hit and Gilbert went on a sold out tour of the UK and US.

Gilbert hit the heights of his career in the 70s but has never been far from the recording studio. He welcomed the 80s with another hit single – 'What’s In A Kiss?' – a Top 10 hit in Ireland and Top 20 in the UK and US.

In 1990 Gilbert was part of a landmark case that changed artists ability to sample and use other artists music and set the precedent on artist copyright of their music. Gilbert successfully sued rapper Biz Markie who had sampled his song Alone Again (Naturally) and won 100% of the royalties.

The 2000s have seen Gilbert enjoying a renewed interest in his music with artists such as Neil Diamond, Dianna Krall and Michael Buble releasing cover versions of his songs. Gilbert has also found a renewed love for touring. He toured across the UK and Ireland in 2015 and 2016.

2017 began his 50th anniversary in music celebrations with a solo performance at the famous Cavern Club in Liverpool and soon after was awarded a brick on The Cavern Wall Of Fame. He has once again toured Ireland, which included a sold-out performance with the 30-piece RTE Radio Orchestra at the Bord Gais Energy Theatre in Dublin. He recently completed a sold out 14-date UK tour March and dates in Asia and Europe.

In September 2017 Gilbert was chosen to perform at BBC Radio 2 Proms In The Park at Hyde Park, London to a crowd of 50,000 people. He performed alongside Sir Ray Davies, Texas, Steps and many more.

Gilbert still has a lot of energy but this show just did not grab me. I would have preferred less animated music videos and more up to date ones.

Went there wondering if this 72 year old mans voice would have stood the test of time. What a great surprise his voice was a sweet as ever. He did his lesser known stuff first and if you want the biggies just wait till the end when it all happens. Recommend.

An excellent concert! The music brought back memories of the 60's and 70's. The urge to get up and dance was great. TC

it was a wonderful concert and we enjoyed it very much. the songs were charming melodious and delightful as was Gilbert. He also made the audience laugh with his joyful humourous chat and gave a memorable performance.

Would have been 5* but for the sound that sometimes drowned out the vocals. Mr O'Sullivan explored his back catalogue with hits, surprises and variety in a high-quality show. Just as impressive was his humility and congeniality towards the fans, hanging around for such a long time after the show to chat and pose for photos with everyone. Too bad Australia had to wait 47 years for his return, he's a class act. Thanks OTH!

Leighroy

Laid back concert until the highlights of some of the major hit songs, that set the venue alight. Good noght out.

A great show that finished on a high with the hits Alone Again and the high energy Get Down.
Inspirational performer who at 71 still sounds the same as he did 50 years ago.

My childhood idol, I thought that I would never get the opportunity to see him life. He really LOVES MUSIC and has put out an album every two years. I can't wait to hear them.

Gilbert was engaging with a voice as good as in the 70s. His enduring songwritng and his charm shone through.

peeweekathi

Really enjoyable show and his voice hasn't changed one bit! Both sets included a mix of his old and new music and you couldn't fault either set. Lined up for the meet and greet, and he said he is coming back next year!

rodz

What wonderful talent and energy. Being a part of this concert instantly replayed the very best of the '80s.

Mouse590

A polished performance with no attention spared to detail. Mr. GO'S travels with his own lights and sound specialists to ensure that all is as planned. He is on stage for more than 2 hours, with six extremely capable male musicians and two female backing singers. A considered start to the show, with the singer/songwriter finding more energy after the break. Towards the end of the show fans moved towards the stage and danced in the aisles. A guest spot with a Melbourne singer, who was once one of his backing group, was well received. A generous performer both with respect to his audience and members of this touring group.

Gibees

Not my cup of tea.

Enjoyed listening to the flute in a variety of
Gilbert's songs.

What an amazing date night! We just saw the fabulous Gilbert O'Sullivan in concert and what a show it was. Every hit that you wanted to hear and so many other great songs. A fantastic band rounded out the equation to supply a brilliant 2 hour show. He closed with the beautiful Alone Again Naturally and then came back with an encore of Matrimony and finished with the crowd on their feet and dancing in the aisles with Get Down. A well deserved standing ovation from the very happy crowd was a fitting end to the show. Then, as if that wasn't enough, we got to meet the man himself, grab a photo and got him to sign the CD we picked up. All in all a great date night with my gorgeous girl. Thank you On The House, you are simply sensational! XXX

Danush

Gilbert O'Sullivan delivered a fabulous show!! Such high energy sustained throughout the entire show! Sensational music!!

ilazarus

To be honest, I hadn't heard of Gilbert before seeing the concert advertised, however after Youtubing, I realised I knew some of his songs.

It was a laid back, enjoyable concert, with audience participation, and a meet and greet after the show which was unique.

Gilbert obviously enjoys touring, and his voice was great.
